Canarian Leftist Party Condemns Far-Right Action at Playa Bastián
The Canarian Left (Izquierda Unida Canaria, or IUC) in Lanzarote, a progressive party within the governing coalition, has strongly condemned the organised action by the far-right group Hazte Oír at Playa Bastián in Costa Teguise. The group set up around fifty umbrellas displaying offensive messages directed at the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
Environmental Irresponsibility and Safety Risks
Local witnesses report that the umbrellas, installed without any safety precautions, were blown into the sea due to strong winds that coincided with a weather pre-alert. This negligent act not only endangered bathers and marine wildlife but also caused avoidable environmental damage. Images of the umbrellas floating and being swept along the shore highlight the complete lack of responsibility exhibited by the organisers.
Orchestrated Actions and Links to Extremist Groups
According to IUC Lanzarote, Hazte Oír has historical ties to the far-right secret society El Yunque. The organisation has repeatedly engaged in activities aimed at generating hatred and division, using front organisations to infiltrate institutions and promote ultra-Catholic and anti-democratic agendas. Previous examples include the transphobic bus that toured Spain in 2017 and campaigns targeting progressive politicians.
Polarisation as a Political Tool
These actions are part of a polarisation strategy driven by far-right sectors seeking to destabilise democratic coexistence through media lynchings, thus avoiding legal channels. “The fight against corruption must always be pursued through the justice system, which should be equipped with independent means and free from political interference,” emphasised Jorge Peñas Lozano, the spokesperson for IU Lanzarote.
Demands and Commitments
IU Canarias calls on the authorities to investigate and penalise those responsible for environmental crimes and for endangering public safety. Furthermore, it urges the media to contextualise these actions by demonstrating their links to El Yunque. The party reaffirms its commitment to the defence of independent justice, the protection of coastal ecosystems, and democratic coexistence, rejecting any form of extremism that employs lies and manipulation as political weapons.
