Jaime Quesada Opens His Collection of Romances, Décimas, and Seguidillas in Yaiza

The Yaiza poet Jaime Quesada presented his new book Alongado al brocal on Friday at the Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas. The work, published by Horizontes Atlánticos with the support of the Yaiza Town Council, features romances, décimas, and seguidillas written over several years. According to the author, these pieces serve as “thoughts from a man of the village, returned to the village”.

A Book Born During the Remedios Festivities

The presentation coincided with the patronal fiestas of Remedios, creating an evening filled with literary emotion. The event featured poetic readings from guests and live music performed by violinist Martina Sánchez Quesada, the author’s granddaughter.

The writer, who dedicated 37 years to teaching, including 35 as headmaster of the Playa Blanca school, described the book as a “newborn” coming into existence on paper after years of personal gestation.

Recognition of Jaime Quesada’s Journey

The Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, emphasised that Quesada’s words carry “the imprint of his profound love for Yaiza,” shaped by his extensive professional and personal experience.

Councillor for Culture, César Rijo, noted that the work reflects “the everyday life of our towns and the stories of our parents and grandparents, a memory that the new generations must not forget.”

Additionally, editor Ignacio Romero highlighted that Quesada’s poetry “conveys culture and identity, two fundamental elements in preserving our history and identity.”

Alongado al brocal: Poetry with Memory and Identity

The foreword by Marcos Hormiga explains that within its pages one will find “the terminology of rural and marine life, the island geography of Lanzarote, and a human portrait coloured by personal experiences.”

In addition to rescuing oral and popular traditions, the book addresses current issues such as intolerance, migration, inequality, and the invisibility of the less privileged, inviting social reflection.

An Evening of Full Attendance

The presentation concluded with a book signing that lasted nearly an hour due to the large turnout. The full house at the Casa de la Cultura confirmed the public’s interest in this new literary work.
