The municipality has experienced a 44% increase in domestic oil recycling, a 5% rise in glass recycling, and an 18% cumulative growth in light packaging and a 14% increase in paper and cardboard in 2025.

La Laguna has made significant strides in sustainability, evidenced by the positive evolution of its recycling figures across all major categories. Between January and August 2025, domestic oil collection rose by 44%. Glass recycling also improved by 5% in the first seven months of the year, confirming an upward trend.

Community Commitment

Fran Hernández, the Councillor for Municipal Services, emphasised that “these results are the product of our residents’ awareness and commitment to waste separation at source and to fostering a more sustainable city. La Laguna is making firm steps toward an environmentally responsible future.”

Improvements in Light Packaging and Paper

In the case of light packaging, the municipality increased its average contribution from 11.7 kg per person in 2024 to 13 kg per person in 2025, representing an increase of over 11%. La Laguna has shown a more favourable performance than larger cities, such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which ended 2024 with only 11.2 kg per person.

The collection of paper and cardboard also confirms this trend. In 2025, contributions reached 15.7 kg per person, compared to 14.3 kg per person the previous year. This places La Laguna above the Canary Islands average, which is 1.2 kg lower.

Equal Access to Recycling Facilities

“Recycling is now possible in all towns and neighbourhoods of the municipality, ensuring equal opportunities and access to collection points for all citizens,” Hernández highlighted. “Our goal is to continue expanding resources, awareness campaigns, and services so that every action counts, and together we can achieve a more sustainable city,” he added.

Reflecting Positive Change

The growth in recycling figures reflects not only the efforts of La Laguna households but also the Town Hall’s planning to extend services to all areas of the municipality. Improvements in textile collection, glass recycling consolidation, and advancements in packaging and paper demonstrate a solid shift in habits.

Leading the Way in Recycling Contributions

With these results, La Laguna is positioned as one of the municipalities in the Canary Islands with the greatest growth in citizen contributions to recycling, standing above the regional average in paper and cardboard recycling and significantly improving in light packaging, with expectations to maintain this trend through the end of the year.
