The feature film by José Alayón features local actors and 400 extras, capturing the authenticity of Canary wrestling.
The film “La Lucha” by José Alayón, filmed entirely in Fuerteventura, premiered successfully at the 73rd San Sebastián Festival, one of the most prestigious film events in the world. Over the weekend, the premiere received backing from the Fuerteventura Film Commission and its councillor Nereida Calero, reflecting the significance of this debut for the island and for productions shot in Majorero territory.
A Historic Premiere
This marks the first film shot entirely in Fuerteventura to be showcased at the Donostia festival. Directed by José Alayón, the film is a 100% Canary production produced by ‘El Viaje Films’, featuring debutant and non-professional actors, predominantly real wrestlers, following a twelve-month casting process led by Cendrine Lapuyade. Additionally, 400 extras from Fuerteventura took part, showcasing the authenticity and strength of the Majorero community.
Filming Locations
Filming took place between February and March 2024, across various locations in the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario, Pájara, Tuineje, and Antigua.
Promoting Canary Identity
To date, cinema has not thoroughly explored the world surrounding the traditional sport of Canary wrestling. The premiere of this feature film has promoted Canarian identity and culture. Notably, an exhibition of this sport, organised by the Government of the Canary Islands, was held on Zurriola Beach, located in front of the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium (the festival venue).
