La Oliva Activates Emergency Plan for Historical Chapel
The La Oliva Town Council has promptly initiated a plan of action to protect the chapel of Puerto Escondido, a site of Cultural Interest, following a fire that occurred on 13th August. The blaze, which was extinguished by the Local Police and Fire Brigade, caused visible damage to decorative stone elements, the entry lintel, and a section of the ceiling’s woodwork.
In order to prevent further deterioration of the structure, the Council requested a report from the Historical Heritage department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, which confirmed the urgent need for intervention. In this initial phase, advice was obtained from restorer Cristina Ojeda, who coordinated the installation of specific protective measures in areas most exposed to harsh weather conditions, such as rain and wind.
The Mayor, Isaí Blanco, stated that the rapid response from the Town Council demonstrates the governing body’s commitment to preserving the historical buildings of the municipality, which are vital to the memory and cultural identity of the island.
Enhancements and Security Measures
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Historical Heritage, David Hernández, announced plans to review the rehabilitation project for the chapel and enhance security in the surrounding area with surveillance cameras. The process to implement a comprehensive restoration of the property is also underway.
Through these measures, the La Oliva Town Council aims to ensure that the chapel of Puerto Escondido preserves its heritage values and continues to be a symbol of Majorero tradition.
