The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Environment Department, emphasises the importance of enjoying La Peña with environmental awareness. The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of La Peña is one of the most anticipated and poignant moments of the year for the people of Fuerteventura. Faith, tradition, and a connection with nature intertwine in a unique celebration that brings together thousands of pilgrims each September. La Peña 2025 is committed to sustainability and respect for the environment.
However, the natural environment that accompanies this sacred journey often suffers the consequences. Litter on the trails, excessive noise, and damage to local flora and fauna are concerns. “Caring for the environment during the pilgrimage is not only an act of responsibility; it is also a way to honour the land and ensure that this tradition remains alive for future generations,” states the Island President, Lola García.
Environmental Awareness During La Peña
Therefore, under the slogan ‘To La Peña with Environmental Awareness!’, the Environment Department, led by Carlos Rodríguez, provides four basic recommendations for enjoying the festivities in an eco-friendly manner.
First and foremost, Councillor Carlos Rodríguez underscores the importance of enjoying the journey while respecting the environment. It is crucial to be aware that sensitive species inhabit the area. Additionally, pilgrims are encouraged to use designated trails to prevent creating new paths that could harm the environment.
Proper Waste Disposal
There is also a strong reminder to dispose of waste in the appropriate containers. Rubbish should only be thrown in designated bins, never in nature. Furthermore, using reusable containers is encouraged to reduce waste generation and contribute to environmental protection.
This message is being disseminated through the social media channels of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, as well as from the Environment area.
