The Cabildo of Fuerteventura reminds the public of the need to exercise extreme caution due to the alert for high temperatures and a pre-alert for calima in Fuerteventura, particularly in relation to the pilgrimage and festivities in honour of Our Lady of La Peña. All events related to La Peña will proceed as planned, except for the pilgrimage from Betancuria to La Vega due to high temperatures.

In response to the alert for high temperatures and pre-alert for calima announced by the General Directorate of Emergencies, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has activated a plan for extraordinary self-protection measures and issued a series of recommendations to the public, especially regarding the traditional pilgrimage.

According to weather warnings, it is expected that on Friday, 19th September, maximum temperatures will reach or exceed 37ºC on the island, with a significant risk level. This alert for high temperatures, confirmed by AEMET, indicates the greatest exposure from 11.00 until 19.59 hours.

For this reason, it is advised to undertake the pilgrimage during the early morning hours. Additionally, the festivities in honour of Our Lady of La Peña have adjusted their programme to avoid areas and times of highest temperatures. Consequently, the traditional Romería-Ofrenda, originally scheduled for Friday at 17.00 hours, will now only include the Ofrenda starting from 19.00 hours, taking place in the plaza of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Peña.

Recommendations

From the Security and Emergencies Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, individuals with respiratory or physical conditions that may be affected by adverse weather conditions are urged not to participate in the pilgrimage while the alert is in effect.

Others are advised to follow a series of guidelines and recommendations such as maintaining constant hydration and avoiding sun exposure, particularly during the hottest hours of the day, from 11.00 to 17.00 hours. Furthermore, the use of suitable clothing is recommended, including lightweight attire, hats, and sunglasses during the daytime.

Those caring for vulnerable individuals are also urged to pay special attention to children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, as well as to avoid intense physical activity.

The cooperation of citizens is appreciated to ensure the safety of everyone during these celebrations.

La Peña will maintain all events except for the pilgrimage from Betancuria to La Vega due to high temperatures.
