Lanzarote Cabildo Sets Minimum Transport Services Amid Planned Strike
The Lanzarote Cabildo has responded to the strike notification submitted by the Citizens’ Services Federation of Comisiones Obreras (CC OO) in the Canary Islands, which affects the regular intercity public transport service in the province. On Friday, it issued a resolution establishing essential minimum services to ensure mobility for the population on the 15th and 16th of September.
Essential Services During the Strike
The institution, through the Transport and Mobility Department, has set minimum services at 70% of the total scheduled trips “to manage the strike situation affecting workers at Arrecife Bus SL.” The strike will take place on the 15th and 16th of September 2025, followed by intermittent stoppages during peak hours from 06:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 until the conflict is resolved, impacting staff at the aforementioned company,” the resolution indicates.
Balancing Rights and Services
The local government believes that “setting the minimum services at this percentage respects the appropriate constitutional balance between conflicting rights.”
Priority Routes and Vulnerable Groups
During the strike, essential services will continue to operate, including priority routes connecting key points on the island such as hospitals, transport stations, and educational centres. The frequency of service will be adapted during peak demand hours to ensure availability during critical times. Additionally, provisions will be made for vulnerable groups, such as individuals with reduced mobility, ensuring their access to transport under safe conditions.
Aiming to Minimise Disruption
According to the institution’s statement, the aim of this proposal is to minimise the impact on the public, especially for those who rely on public transport for essential activities. “The Lanzarote Cabildo is working closely with the transport company to ensure compliance with the minimum services. Furthermore, it calls for understanding and patience from the public regarding any inconveniences that may arise due to the strike,” they emphasised at the end.
