Lanzarote Establishes New Hospitality Department to Enhance Tourism and Gastronomy

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, under the presidency of Oswaldo Betancort, has officially established the Hospitality Area, a new island department aimed at boosting the hospitality sector and enhancing the gastronomic and tourist offerings of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

This measure, formalised on Wednesday, 3 September, with its publication in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, represents a significant step by the current government group to strengthen one of the island’s strategic economic sectors.

The Hospitality Area, which is integrated into the structure of the Commerce Area, is not a result of hastiness but a direct consequence of a carefully designed plan to address the needs of the sector. Its implementation will allow for the inclusion of a forthcoming specific budget allocation intended to support the hospitality industry, as well as the development of training projects for professionals in the sector and their employees, aiming to elevate service quality and the competitiveness of local businesses.

Oswaldo Betancort, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, emphasised that “the creation of the Hospitality Area reflects our clear commitment to a key sector for the economy and cultural identity of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. We are investing in a strong, qualified, and sustainable hospitality industry, which not only generates employment but also enriches the experience of our residents and visitors.”

Designing Specific Policies

Meanwhile, the executive councillor for the Area, Armando Santana, underscored the importance of providing the island’s hospitality sector with its own structure within the administration: “With this new Area, we respond to a long-standing demand from the sector. We will have greater capacity to design specific policies, offer quality training, and allocate resources that help modernise and strengthen the hospitality sector, one of the most dynamic economic drivers of our island.”

The decree establishing the Area, approved on 28 August and published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, designates the new department as the Insular Area of Open Government (Citizen Participation and Transparency), Animal Welfare, Trade (Hospitality), and Consumption.

Through this initiative, the Cabildo of Lanzarote places hospitality in the deserving position within the island’s strategic policies.
