The island of Lanzarote is preparing to delve into the realms of imagination and spoken word with the 13th edition of the International Oral Storytelling Festival “Palabras al Vuelo,” which will take place from 27th September to 12th October. Over two weeks, the festival will feature 64 events across theatres, libraries, cultural centres, schools, and unique locations such as volcanoes, caves, and a catamaran.
A Diverse Line-up of Storytellers
The festival will showcase storytellers from Venezuela, Argentina, the United Kingdom, the Canary Islands, and the Spanish mainland. It is organised by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in collaboration with the municipalities of Arrecife, Tías, Haría, and Yaiza.
Culture Councillor Jesús Machín Tavío emphasised that “this festival serves as a valuable bridge between the oral tradition of the Canary Islands and new forms of storytelling, uniting voices from around the world with our island identity.” Meanwhile, the Education Councillor, Ascensión Toledo, highlighted the importance of engaging students, igniting a passion for oral storytelling in future generations.
New Features This Year
This year’s organiser, Cristina Temprano, noted the expansion of the number of artists and activities, alongside a family day featuring simultaneous offerings for all ages. Among the standout events are “Tales Among Volcanoes,” collective performances like “Planet Story,” storytelling workshops, and experiences aboard a catamaran.
Commitment to the Community
The festival also reinforces its social commitment with performances at the Insular Hospital Residence, the Tahíche Penitentiary Centre, and educational sessions at various schools across the island.
Accessibility and Reservations
Access to the activities will include a mix of free performances and ticketed shows, with prices ranging from €10 to €25. Full programming and reservations can be found on the Cabildo of Lanzarote’s Culture Area website and at www.palabrasalvuelo.com.
