The Cabildo of Lanzarote has formally joined the “Tourism that Counts” manifesto, promoted by Exceptur, the alliance of businesses within the sector. The aim is to drive a model that reflects its social, economic, and environmental returns. This initiative advocates for a more balanced, conscious, and innovative form of tourism, placing destinations at the centre of a transformation towards a more sustainable and higher-quality sector.

Commitment to Sustainability

President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, stated that “Lanzarote has been and will continue to be a benchmark in sustainability and the pursuit of a more humane form of tourism that protects our identity while creating opportunities for our community. By adhering to the Exceptur manifesto, we strengthen a vision that connects with our island model and the future of tourism in the Canary Islands and Spain.”

Aligning with International Values

Additionally, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote highlighted the significance of the island’s alignment with the manifesto’s principles. “Our promotional efforts and international positioning align with the values of Tourism that Counts. We aim to continue showcasing Lanzarote as a competitive and distinctive destination that prioritises quality and innovation without compromising its identity or environmental values,” he explained.

A Natural Step Towards Responsible Tourism

From the business sector, Susana Pérez, president of the Lanzarote Tourism Federation (FTL), also viewed the endorsement as a natural progression towards responsible and future-oriented tourism. “For the tourism sector in Lanzarote, joining this manifesto reaffirms our commitment to competitiveness through responsible and regenerative tourism. The island’s tourism entrepreneurs wish to contribute to a tourism model that generates real benefits for the local economy while being mindful of our territory and community,” she stated.

A Call to Action

Moreover, a representative from Exceptur celebrated Lanzarote’s incorporation into this common initiative, recognising its value as a unique and inspiring destination. “Lanzarote becomes a key ally in this roadmap to transform tourism in Spain. Its expertise in sustainability and its ability to balance development and conservation position it as a national and international reference. I invite all public and private entities interested in promoting better tourism to join this initiative,” he urged.
