The Cabildo de Lanzarote presented the new edition of Lanzarote Recicla on Wednesday, an environmental awareness campaign that has become a benchmark for citizen participation over the years. The programme, which incorporates new proposals each year, aims to reinforce the reduction, reuse, and recycling of waste across all social spheres.

The Waste Councillor, Domingo Cejas, explained that the 2025/2026 edition aims to expand both the number of participants and activities primarily aimed at school audiences. Notably, recycling workshops for the Christmas and Carnival seasons are being reintroduced, as they were highly requested in previous years.

Cejas emphasised that the campaign “is not just a one-off initiative, but a network of awareness that each year includes more schools, families, and organisations.” He indicated that the key to success lies in the collaboration between institutions, businesses, and citizens to advance towards a circular economy model on the island.

Programme Details

This year’s programming includes consolidated projects along with expansions. Among them is Recicole, aimed at educational centres; the collection of batteries through the Ecopilas Forest; the Solidarity Trainers programme benefiting Equatorial Guinea; and the collection of Solidarity Caps, which in this edition will support the Iraitza Association.

The councillor also highlighted the importance of visits to the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, where students can learn first-hand about waste management processes in Lanzarote. Additionally, specific activities have been scheduled to encourage domestic composting and improve waste separation at home.

Future of Waste Management

“Recycling begins at home, in schools, in shops, and within institutions. The future of our island depends on our ability to reduce and manage waste correctly,” Cejas stated, while announcing new investments to enhance awareness campaigns.

Over 7,000 Tonnes Recycled

Data from the Cabildo’s Waste Area supports this trend of growing citizen involvement. In the first half of 2025 alone, 7,171.96 tonnes of separated waste were collected, a figure that confirms the population’s commitment to environmental protection and proper waste management.

The institution aims to continue improving selective collection rates and minimising the waste that ends up in landfill. To achieve this, the island’s corporation insists on the necessity of collaboration from the entire Lanzarote community.
