Lanzarote Launches Historic €15 Million Housing Plan to Tackle Accommodation Crisis

The councillor Jesús Machín outlined progress made in housing during the Plenary session, lamenting that “the previous socialist government did not allocate a single euro to this sector despite having specific funds.”

Ambitious Housing Plan Launched

The Cabildo of Lanzarote has initiated an ambitious plan to alleviate the housing crisis, mobilising nearly 15 million euros to expand the stock of public and affordable rental housing on the island.

During the Corporation’s Plenary session, councillor Jesús Machín Tavío denounced that the previous socialist government invested no funds in housing, despite having available specific allocations, stressing that “access to dignified housing remains one of the main challenges for the people of Lanzarote.”

Investment and Development Details

This investment will enable the acquisition of three plots in Arrecife and Uga for the construction of new homes, as well as the purchase of 42 properties in Playa Blanca for affordable rental, in collaboration with the Canarian Housing Institute (ICAVI). Furthermore, 39 commercial premises have been converted into living spaces, and contracts for three developments in Maneje have been awarded, totalling 201 new homes with an investment exceeding 28 million euros. Soon, 136 homes in Playa Blanca and 46 in Arrecife will be put out to tender.

Support for Young People

The councillor also highlighted that Lanzarote became the first Cabildo in the Canary Islands to approve the Young Rent Voucher, with an investment of 1.4 million euros, aimed at facilitating young people’s emancipation on the island.

“We are transforming the reality of housing in Lanzarote through actions rather than empty rhetoric,” asserted Machín, assuring that they will continue to work alongside the Government of the Canary Islands to provide real solutions for those who need it most.
