Support for Intellectual Disability in Lanzarote

The President of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, along with the Councillor for Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, and the Deputy Councillor for Social Welfare of the Canary Islands Government, Francisco Candil, visited the adult life preparation and family respite flat run by the Creciendo Social Association in Playa Blanca.

This facility, which has already welcomed over 30 individuals since its launch, has an approved funding of €60,000 from the Cabildo de Lanzarote for 2025. It aims to promote the autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities while providing respite for their families through temporary stays in a supportive, adapted environment.

Oswaldo Betancort emphasised that this project “is no longer a pilot scheme, but a reality in Lanzarote.” He noted, “This house offers the autonomy these individuals require for their daily development.” He also congratulated all the professionals at the Association “for providing a better quality of life to the people of Lanzarote.”

In turn, Councillor Marci Acuña highlighted that this is “a flat for family respite and the emancipation process of people with intellectual disabilities.” He added that “it has proven its effectiveness and fits seamlessly with the Insular Strategy for Accessibility and Inclusion, as well as the care policies and excellence in service that the island institution works on daily.”

Acuña stressed the role played by associations like this in improving family wellbeing and reiterated the Cabildo’s support for initiatives that consolidate a fundamental support network in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

Social Welfare Initiatives

The Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Social Welfare Department, continues its commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families through various innovative projects on the island. Among these is the supervised flat by Adislan, also aimed at preparing individuals for independent living and assisting in the transition to adulthood for people with intellectual disabilities.

These resources complement other social initiatives such as strengthening dependency care programmes, investing in new residential facilities and day centres, and providing financial support to third-sector organisations working for inclusion.
