The Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen women’s team achieved another victory this Saturday at the Antonio Moreno Insular Pavilion against Rocasa Gran Canaria (24-25) in a match corresponding to the second round of the Canary Islands Government Cup.
Match Overview
The game started positively for the home team, who gradually built a small lead as the first half progressed (15-13).
Rocasa improved after the break, slowly narrowing the gap on the scoreboard at the Antonio Moreno. However, the home side responded effectively, extending their lead to three goals once again. In the last ten minutes, only one team dominated the court—the Puerto del Carmen. There was enough time not only to close the gap but also to take the lead as the match drew to a close.
The squad led by Ricardo Aguilera was left unable to savour victory after being ahead on the scoreboard for more than fifty minutes of play.
Coach’s Comments
For the home coach, Jesús Casanova, this match was “another typical preseason game, with a bit more rhythm than the previous one. We also faced a stronger opponent than Romade, whom we played last Saturday. We’re starting to see some progress, but we still need to work on some concepts, particularly our defensive toughness. We need to increase our intensity because we are losing too many matches. In this game, Rocasa went ahead from the first minute and always led the scoreboard with counterattacks and penetrations through our defence. Fortunately, in the last 10 to 15 minutes, we upped our defensive intensity, managed to steal some balls, and, in the final two minutes, attacking with a numerical advantage due to a Rocasa exclusion, we were able to equalise and ultimately secure the victory with just seconds to spare. We must continue to work hard; we’re on the right track. We have deficiencies to address gradually. Next, we face Morro on Wednesday and again in Tenerife on Saturday, and hopefully, after these matches, the team will establish a more positive rhythm than we’re currently showing, which, on the other hand, is normal for preseason with many new players and concepts. It’s a process that takes time,” concluded the Tías coach.
Top Scorers
Local player Susana Martín was the top scorer of the match, netting seven goals. For the Tías team, Mónica Cabrera and Brenda Torres stood out, each scoring four goals in a well-rounded effort.
