The Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen women’s División de Honor Oro team secured a victory this Saturday at the Municipal de Tías, winning their first official match of the season against Romade de Tamaraceite (31-20) in the opening round of the Copa Gobierno de Canarias.
Match Overview
The match was not particularly eventful. The Tiñoseras, playing at a higher level, started strongly (4-0, 5th minute), taking an initial lead that they would maintain throughout the game.
Coach Roberto Santana’s side struggled to find their rhythm, while the aurinegras executed their well-known strategy—tight defence, solid goalkeeping from Mazaira, long passes, and quick counterattacks.
As the minutes passed, Romade’s chances dwindled, and they entered half-time eight goals down (16-8).
Player Changes and Tactical Adjustments
Casanova made typical pre-season substitutions, giving bench players an opportunity. Yuli Quevedo experienced some discomfort in her calf and opted to sit out to avoid further injury, joining Carolina López and Andrea Guerrero on the bench, both of whom were minor absences due to the physical demands of pre-season training with Toño Cedrés.
Nothing changed in the second half. The home side maintained their superiority and control, and despite areas needing improvement, they never seemed at risk of losing their lead.
Coach’s Thoughts
After the victory, Tiñoseras coach Jesús Casanova commented, “The pre-season has been intense, with a lot of physical training, as expected. The players are currently feeling fatigued with some minor injuries, but we are following our planned trajectory. This first match featured many mistakes, which is normal. I was a bit disappointed with the defence, as it was the only area we had concentrated on with intensity, but we still haven’t quite found our footing there. We primarily need consistency and to anticipate the opponents’ movements, which will require significant work. The positive aspect is our counterattack; we’re doing well with it without having specifically trained for it. Improving our defence and refining our transition to counterattacks will give us a better chance of achieving our desired results.” Regarding the upcoming challenges, Casanova stated honestly, “This week will involve a lot of physical training, as we need to prepare the team for what lies ahead, and thereafter, we must focus on improving our defence, which lacks a bit of aggression, and also our attack, as we still have much work to do.”
Top Scorers
Haridian Rodríguez was the top scorer for the visitors and the match overall with eight goals. Lucía Betancort closely followed as the leading scorer for the Tiñoseras with seven goals, supported offensively by Brenda Torres and Lucía Olivier, each contributing six goals.
Upcoming Fixtures
The Jesús Casanova-led team will face Rocasa Gran Canaria in the second round next Saturday, 6 September, at 12:00 at the Pabellón Insular Antonio Moreno.
