The Insular Federation of Traditional Sailing Boats of Lanzarote has reversed its announcement regarding the suspension of its sporting activities and the scheduled regattas. After issuing a statement detailing the halt of all programming due to a lack of financial support and the obligation to repay part of a grant received, the federation has publicly apologised to the Town Hall of Arrecife and those affected.
The president of the Federation, Juan Pérez, explained that the message released was sent “in a climate of anger and concern” over the lack of liquidity stemming from issues in the administrative management of the grant for 2023. He acknowledged that the way the decision was communicated “was not the most appropriate.”
The current Board of Directors emphasises that the problems arise from the justification of the funding managed by the previous administration, which submitted documentation with issues that were not adequately clarified. The entity assures that it is already working with the Town Hall of Arrecife to review the file, clarify the requirements, and ensure transparency in the process.
Joint Efforts to Clarify the Situation
The Federation also requests understanding and active collaboration from the municipal corporation to resolve the ongoing economic and administrative situation, address the existing debt, and ensure the continuity of the regattas and the federation’s activities.
Despite the uncertainty generated, the board insists that its commitment to traditional sailing remains “strong,” and that competitions will soon resume. In this regard, support from athletes, clubs, and fans is sought during the internal renewal process.
