The 2025 Spanish Junior Surf Championship took place this weekend at Playa de España in the Asturian town of Villaviciosa, bringing together the leading young talents in national surfing amidst a stunning natural backdrop. Over three days of competition, as reported by the organisers in a press release, the young surfers competed in the Under-18, Under-16, and Under-14 categories, both male and female, under conditions that favoured an impressive display of high technical skill.

The exceptionally talented surfer from Lanzarote, Alejo Valido, was crowned Spanish champion in the Under-16 male category, claiming his third consecutive national title. The final featured four of the most prominent surfers on the circuit: Basque surfer Oinatz Ortega, Cantabrian Álvaro Casanova —the Under-14 champion in 2024— and Tenerife’s Kai Schmitz. Alejo, who was defending his title from the previous year, led the heat from start to finish, demonstrating remarkable technical and competitive solidity.
His dominance was evident from the initial minutes as he asserted his authority over Ortega, who finished in second place, followed by Casanova and Schmitz. Trained under the guidance of Franito Sáenz, the young contestant once again proved why he is considered one of the great hopes in national surfing.
Fellow Lanzarote surfer Sol Borelli, meanwhile, achieved second place in the Under-18 female category, following a brilliant performance that highlights the potential of the island’s talent pool. Her powerful style and determination in each heat captivated both the audience and the judges, clearly showcasing her competitive evolution.
The results achieved by Alejo Valido and Sol Borelli reflect the high standard of youth surfing in Lanzarote and these athletes’ personal commitment to their training and progress.
