The initiative reflects President Oswaldo Betancort’s commitment to active and close social policies implemented within the island’s Institution.
This Thursday, Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, along with Nori Machín, the Counsellor for the Area of Seniors and Intergenerational Relations, visited Playa de Los Fariones in Puerto del Carmen. They took part in one of the AquaBeach sessions, a summer activity that gathers dozens of older adults from all municipalities of the island weekly as part of the Insular Active Rejuvenation Plan, Plan +Vital.
This marked the first time that the President shared this experience with the participants, following his commitment made during the press conference announcing the summer programme aimed at seniors. “I wanted to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere experienced in each AquaBeach session firsthand, alongside all of you. Our aim as a Cabildo is to ensure that older individuals have an active, healthy, and, above all, accompanied summer. Today, in Puerto del Carmen, I have been able to confirm that we are achieving this,” he stated.
Engagement and Popularity
Counsellor Nori Machín emphasised the approachability and warm reception of the activity across all municipalities. “I have had the opportunity to be with seniors at various beaches on the island and observe how they enjoy themselves, socialise, and exercise in a privileged natural setting. AquaBeach has established itself as an essential event for them, which is increasingly in demand, and we will continue to promote such initiatives until the end of September, with the possibility of extending them into October if the weather permits,” she noted.
The AquaBeach sessions combine gentle walks along the shore, mobility exercises in the sand, and aquatic activities in the sea, all accompanied by music and led by specialised personnel. Its free nature and absence of prior registration allow any older individual to join at any time and location.
Growing Participation
Throughout this summer, AquaBeach has gathered hundreds of older adults at various locations along the coast of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. At beaches such as Guacimeta, El Reducto, Playa Dorada, Famara, and La Garita, groups often exceed 30 participants per session, highlighting the steady growth of an initiative that is gaining more followers.
To date, the activity has engaged over two hundred participants in different locations, making it one of the most valued proposals of the Plan +Vital. The festive atmosphere, simplicity of the dynamic, and opportunity to share quality time in community explain this sustained success.
