Cabildo de Lanzarote Expands Support for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities
The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, accompanied by the Social Welfare Councillor, Marci Acuña, and the Deputy Councillor for Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco Candil, have visited the adult life preparation and family respite flat operated by the Creciendo Social Association in Playa Blanca.
Supporting Autonomy and Family Respite
This initiative, which has welcomed over 30 individuals since its launch, has received an approved funding of €60,000 from the Cabildo of Lanzarote for 2025. The facility aims to promote the autonomy of individuals with intellectual disabilities while providing respite for their families through temporary stays in a supportive and adapted environment.
A New Reality for Lanzarote
In a press statement on Monday, President Betancort emphasised that this project “is no longer a pilot scheme but a real service in Lanzarote.” He remarked, “This house provides the autonomy these individuals require for their daily development.” He also extended his congratulations to all professionals at the Association, stating that “this resource enhances the quality of life for the people of Lanzarote.”
A Focus on Family Respite and Emancipation
Meanwhile, Councillor Acuña highlighted that this facility serves “as a respite for families and supports the process of emancipation for individuals with intellectual disabilities.” He added that it has proven effective and aligns perfectly with the Insular Strategy for Accessibility and Inclusion, as well as the institution’s commitment to care and excellence in attention that the Cabildo pursues daily.
Collaboration for Well-being
Acuña underscored the important role that associations like this play in enhancing family well-being and reiterated the Cabildo’s commitment to supporting such initiatives that establish a crucial support network in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
Innovative Resources for Social Welfare
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Social Welfare Area, continues to affirm its commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families via various innovative projects across the island. Among these is the supervised flat operated by Adislan, which focuses on preparing individuals for independent living and supports the transition to adulthood for those with intellectual disabilities.
These resources complement other social initiatives, including strengthening dependency care programmes, investing in new residential facilities and day centres, and providing financial support to third sector entities that work towards inclusion.
