The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the contracting company, UTE Tiagua-Horinsa, signed the replanning act this Tuesday, allowing for the commencement of sanitation works in the coastal town of El Golfo, in the municipality of Yaiza.

Project Details

The project, awarded for an amount of €1.4 million with a completion timeframe of 10 months, includes the installation of a wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), the construction of a sanitation network, and a system for the storage and reuse of treated water. This has been a long-awaited initiative that had been stalled for years, and the current government led by Oswaldo Betancort has managed to set it in motion in record time.

Statements from Officials

Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Cabildo and the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, stated, “Today, we take a historic step that unlocks a project that has been stuck for years and was a just demand from the residents of El Golfo. This government committed to unblocking it, and we have delivered. The signing of the replanning act guarantees that machinery will commence operations, and the transformation of the town is now a reality. We fulfil our promise and secure public investment to ensure we do not lose state funding for this project, which originated from an agreement in 2017 and has a deadline of December this year.”

Meanwhile, the Councillor for Water and Vice President of the Water Consortium, Domingo Cejas, emphasised the effort made to reach this point, asserting, “As of today, the execution period for this strategic work, which will ensure a qualitative leap in the quality of life for residents and the environmental sustainability of El Golfo, officially starts. The technical team of the Consortium has worked professionally to make this signing possible, ensuring that the inaction of the previous government does not adversely affect the residents of El Golfo. Renouncing this project was never an option for the current island government.”

Understanding the Replanning Act

A replanning act constitutes the formal acceptance that the contractor may begin the work, confirming that the location aligns with the project plans and marking the start of the contractual timeframe for execution.

With this document, the sanitation project for El Golfo officially commences after years of delay.
