Lanzarote’s Senior Citizens Visit 36th Arts and Crafts Fair Amid Virgen de Los Dolores Festivities

The Lanzarote Cabildo, through the Department of Senior Citizens and Intergenerational Relations led by Nori Machín, organised a visit on Thursday for nearly 800 seniors from the island and La Graciosa to the 36th edition of the Craft Fair held in Mancha Blanca, coinciding with the patron celebrations in honour of the Virgen de Los Dolores.

On this day, participants were able to enjoy a performance by the Canarian comic Yanely Hernández and explore the various areas and stalls of the fair showcasing a wide variety of handmade products, from ceramics to traditional textiles. They also attended a prayer to the Virgin at the chapel led by parish priest Francisco, and received a welcoming gift.

The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasised the need to promote the “identity mark” that the senior citizen community has left on society. “Thanks to the efforts of our elders, we have been able to enjoy the quality of life we have today,” he stressed.

Councillor Nori Machín emphasised the importance of creating spaces for social interaction and leisure among citizens, as well as recognising the work of artisans in Lanzarote. “I would also like to thank the municipalities on the island for collaborating with the Cabildo on this initiative that brings joy to our seniors,” said Machín.

The visit to the 36th Craft Fair, an event that has become a hallmark of the artisan sector, concluded with a performance by the Guarapo group from La Gomera, allowing members of the island institution and various municipalities to enjoy music and dance alongside the senior community.
