The Cabildo of Lanzarote reiterated on Thursday its confidence that the labour dispute between the employees of the intercity transport company, Arrecife Bus S.L., and the CCOO Canarias Citizen Services Federation will be resolved soon, with the aim of restoring normalcy in a service whose demand continues to grow.
The councillor for Transport and Mobility, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, reminded that although the institution lacks decision-making power in the negotiations between the company and employees, it does hold the responsibility of guaranteeing essential services. In this regard, the Cabildo recently established minimum services at 70% on strike days, ensuring connections to hospitals, educational centres, and basic infrastructures, as well as providing care for vulnerable groups.
The insular corporation has thanked users for their patience amid the intermittent disruptions affecting mobility on the island, while emphasising that its priority is to “protect the general interest of the public.”
Increase in Demand
Intercity transport has seen a significant rise in recent months. In the first half of 2025 alone, the number of passengers exceeded four million, representing an increase of 8.47% compared to the same period last year.
The Cabildo notes that during 2024, it allocated over €8 million for subsidies to ensure free passes and multi-journey tickets for Canary residents. This investment is complemented by other modernisation measures, such as the introduction of sustainable buses, the creation of new preferred stops, the implementation of bank card payments, and the launch of the taxi-bus service.
The president of the institution, Oswaldo Betancort, has stated that these actions are part of the Insular Plan for Sustainable Transport and Mobility, aimed at improving quality of life and reinforcing social and territorial cohesion in Lanzarote.
