Las Palmas City Council Enhances Beach Accessibility and Safety
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the leadership of the Maritime City Council headed by Pedro Quevedo, has awarded a contract for the acquisition of several pieces of equipment aimed at improving accessibility, safety, and health response capabilities at Las Canteras and El Confital beaches.
According to a statement from the council, the initiative comes with an investment of €111,141, financed through a direct grant provided by the Government Council of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, dedicated to fully funding improvements along the coastline and beaches of the Bay of Confital.
Quevedo, who expressed gratitude for the Cabildo’s financial support, emphasised that this purchase “is part of the commitments outlined in the City of the Sea 2030 Strategy, which is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to create an inclusive, safe, digital, and sustainable coastal model.”
“With these investments, we are advancing towards an inclusive and sustainable coastline model, ensuring guaranteed access for people with reduced mobility and equipping rescue services with modern and efficient means,” Quevedo added.
Components of the Contract
The contract is divided into three lots: flexible walkways, three individual rescue towers, and an Autopulse cardiocompressor system.
The first lot, awarded to Kaldevi Ingeniería Geriátrica for €25,641.60, includes the supply of 240 linear metres of roll-up walkways made from recycled PET. These structures are designed to ensure universal accessibility to the beaches, facilitating the passage of people with reduced mobility and light service vehicles.
The walkways must have a non-slip and antibacterial surface, signage for individuals with visual impairments, and possess high resistance to ultraviolet rays, salinity, and extreme temperatures.
Rescue Towers
Lot 2, awarded to B-Mar Serveis Costers Integrats for €66,500, encompasses the provision of three modular lifeguard towers that are dismantlable and transportable for rescue services. These structures, operational throughout the year, will be built from materials resistant to the marine environment and feature a low visual impact design, to be located at Las Canteras.
They will consist of elevated compartments offering a 360º view, windows with solar filters, and vandal-proof covers. Additionally, they will have ski-like bases foreasy transportation. The railings and structure will be made of marine-grade stainless steel and will include a mast for displaying sea state flags, along with safety enclosures and adapted interior space for monitoring purposes.
Cardiocompressor Acquisition
Lot 3, awarded toGlobal Emergencias for €19,000, involves the acquisition of an automatic self-regulating cardiocompressor using the portable and mechanical Autopulse system. This device features an intuitive interface, dual power supply (battery and mains), and an autonomy of over 100 minutes, fully compliant with European resuscitation guidelines (ERC).
