A huge electrical storm that produced countless lightning strikes has awakened residents in the north of Lanzarote and La Graciosa early Wednesday morning. They were also astonished by the powerful rumble of thunder that preceded the rain.

While the rain was minimal, as several residents explained to this newspaper, it was primarily an immense number of lightning strikes that fell on both islands, and very close to Fuerteventura, around four in the morning, as shown by a satellite image shared early in the day by the Consortium of Safety and Emergencies.

Initially, the storm was not expected, other than what might logically occur due to the accumulation of clouds and the intense heat currently affecting the eastern part of the archipelago. In fact, the State Meteorological Agency had predicted predominantly clear skies for Wednesday, apart from some intervals of mid and high-level clouds, increasing in the evening. Additionally, hazy conditions were expected to persist, particularly in higher areas, with a possibility of increased concentrations by the end of the day. Minimum temperatures were expected to remain relatively stable, while maximums may rise slightly to moderately, especially in the northeast, potentially reaching 32 degrees Celsius widely, and 34 degrees in the interior and western slopes.

It is also possible that minimum temperatures in the western interior do not drop below 25 degrees, with winds varying from light to moderate in the northeast, generally light easterly winds in higher areas and the interior.
