Lionel Morales has been crowned this weekend as the Champion of Spain in the Spanish Paratriathlon Championship held in Águilas, Murcia.

Morales, the Lanzarote paratriathlete representing the Canary Islands under the name of CD Natación Nadamas Las Marinas, achieved victory in the PTS2 category with a time of 01:13:03. He was followed by Javier Vergara Rubio from Mallorca (01:21:59), a teammate who finished fourth last week in the World Championship event in Portugal. Oskar Garro Antxia from the Basque Country came in third place (01:34:12).

Lionel Morales recorded the fastest times in all three segments of the race: swimming (00:12:21), cycling (00:31:11), and running (00:22:41), though he was slightly slower in the first transition.

Morales Reflects on Victory

After the event in Águilas, Lionel Morales remarked, “This new title of Champion of Spain in Águilas 2025 holds a very special meaning for me and my family, as another 13th of September, exactly eleven years ago today in 2014, I was in hospital in a coma due to heatstroke right here in Águilas. Eight days in a coma and nearly a month in the hospital. Just look at all the time that has passed and everything I have achieved these years for not giving up.” He concluded with pride and joy, stating that he is having a spectacular end to the season and is already focused on the World Championship finale in Alanya, Turkey from Lanzarote.
