Major Urban Developments Planned for Arrecife, Enhancing Mobility and Accessibility

The Maneje district, which is undergoing significant urban development with public housing, will have a new access road connecting Tahíche and Arrecife.

Meeting Overview

The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the Lanzarote Cabildo’s Public Works Councillor, Jacobo Medina, held a working meeting at the Town Hall to oversee and discuss the progress of various projects that are either completed or in the drafting stage for execution in the capital of Lanzarote.

During this meeting, the Mayor, who is also directly responsible for the Public Works area in the Town Hall, and the island councillor reviewed the status of significant ongoing projects that are either locally funded through the Island Cooperation Plan or scheduled for upcoming tenders.

Key Urban Development Projects

The two public officials discussed crucial projects aimed at enhancing mobility, accessibility, and urban modernisation in Arrecife. Among them were plans for the comprehensive renewal of Calle Triana and a second phase at Manolo Millares, which will extend from the old Municipal Cemetery area to the junction with the Antonio Zerolo school.

Another important initiative led by the Public Works Department, under Councillor Jacobo Medina’s direction, focuses on creating new access routes from the Tahíche road into Arrecife, aimed at the Maneje neighbourhood, which is currently experiencing significant urban growth with 400 new public housing units being constructed, of which 201 are underway.

Infrastructure Improvements

During the meeting, the Mayor was briefed on the progress of a project designed to improve the road connecting Costa Teguise and Arrecife through the Los Mármoles and Lloret areas. Additionally, enhancements will be made to key entry routes into the city, including interventions on the LZ-101 (entry via Puerto Naos) and the LZ-20 (access to the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital), aiming to present a more polished, modern image that aligns with the urban transformation of Arrecife.

Investment in Public Spaces

With regard to public space investment, Jacobo Medina informed the Mayor that “the renovation of the Plaza de la Iglesia de San Ginés is nearing completion, expected by early November, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a revitalised space adapted to current needs.”

Positive Collaboration and Future Meetings

Mayor Yonathan de León praised the collaboration with the Cabildo’s Public Works area and emphasised that these planned initiatives “respond to the need to transform Arrecife into a more modern, accessible, and refreshed city for both residents and the thousands of visitors.”

Island Public Works Councillor Jacobo Medina highlighted that this visit to Arrecife “marks the beginning of a new series of meetings I will conduct in the final quarter of the year with all municipalities on the island, to follow up on ongoing works and coordinate those that will be executed immediately.”

“We are reinforcing collaboration between institutions because each municipality requires specific solutions and projects tailored to its unique context. In the case of Arrecife, as the island’s capital, an additional effort is necessary to meet the demands of its residents and fulfil its role as the economic and social engine of Lanzarote, home to nearly fifty per cent of the island’s population,” stated Medina.

The Public Works Department of the Cabildo Insular reiterates its commitment to improving infrastructure and modernising all municipalities on the island, implementing investments that enhance citizens’ quality of life while projecting Lanzarote as a modern, sustainable, and accessible destination.
