“The institutions of Fuerteventura have a moral duty to show the people of the island their position”

The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura urges political groups represented in the island’s institutions to agree on motions regarding peace in Gaza and the West Bank. To this end, the Insular Executive Committee of PSOE agreed in its meeting yesterday that the socialist groups in local councils and the Cabildo should present a motion in support of the Palestinian people and in favour of peace in Gaza and the West Bank to initiate discussion, agreement, and voting.

Support for Peace Initiatives

In line with this, the first point of the motion to be presented to the councils and the Cabildo calls on PSOE Fuerteventura to back the position of the Spanish Government in defence of peace, the UN Summit on the Two-State Solution, and respect for International Humanitarian Law, recognising Palestine as a state, as is being done by a significant majority of UN member states.

Moral Responsibility to Act

José Cabrera, Secretary of Municipal Politics of PSOE Fuerteventura, emphasises that “the institutions of Fuerteventura have a moral duty to show the people of the island their position regarding the development of this conflict that transcends the Middle East and publicly express Fuerteventura’s support for the Spanish Government in its international efforts to prioritise peace and the safeguarding of the civilian population who are victims of the war.”

“Remaining on the sidelines of such a dark chapter in human history is, quite simply, immoral,” adds José Cabrera. “We must speak out, debate, and reach an institutional consensus.”

Condemnation of Violence

The motion’s text begins by recalling that the Socialist Party and the Spanish Government strongly condemned the attacks by Hamas on 7 October 2023. This unjustifiable terrorist act against Israel resulted in over 1,200 deaths and the kidnapping of 251 hostages. In the face of such barbarity, the PSOE took a stand.

This same sensitivity to barbarity and cruelty towards others motivates the PSOE to present this motion, as the military response from the Israeli Government has led to a campaign of mass and disproportionate destruction that, after nearly two years, primarily affects the Palestinian civilian population.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Gaza has recorded over 65,000 fatalities, including nearly 18,500 children; more than 159,000 injured; and almost two million displaced individuals, many of whom have been displaced multiple times, without guaranteed access to food, clean water, medical care, or safe shelter. In the West Bank, attacks by armed illegal settlers have led to forced displacements, deaths, illegal expropriations, and the expansion of settlements in Palestinian territories.

The Growing Food Crisis

The Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) has confirmed the first official famine in the history of the Middle East, with half a million people classified as being in famine (IPC-5) and over one million in an emergency phase (IPC-4). Hunger, lack of water, and the collapse of the healthcare system have been used as weapons of war. Furthermore, more than 21,000 children have acquired some form of disability since the conflict began.
