The mountaineer and climber based in Fuerteventura, Mandy Marco Placeres, has reached the summit of Golden Peak, or Spantik (7,027 metres), in the heart of the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan this week. The achievement was confirmed by the expedition agency Explore K2 and shared on social media by the expedition organisation, which celebrated the feat alongside Placeres’ climbing partners.
International Ascent
Placeres was part of an international ascent led by guide Kumail Askole. The organising company described the achievement as “a remarkable success story” resulting from determination, teamwork, and the technical capabilities of the participants.
“May you continue to inspire the global mountaineering community with your strength and passion for adventure,” they conveyed on social media.
A Historic Achievement
The athlete also shared a statement from the International Climbing Federation of Pakistan, acknowledging that according to their records, “no Spaniard had reached the summit of Golden Peak before.”
The organisation emphasised the difficulty of the ascent, completed under adverse weather conditions and demanding technical requirements. They extended their congratulations to Spain and Mandy Placeres, expressing gratitude for his choice of Pakistan’s mountains as the backdrop for his sporting challenges.

Dedicating the Summit to Fuerteventura
The 54-year-old climber dedicated his ascent to Fuerteventura and his hometown, posing on Golden Peak with the flag presented to him by the Antigua City Council before his departure. “I am from Antigua, and I am Canarian, and I want the world to know,” the mountaineer stated.
