Filmmaker María Sanz Esteve Shoots Teaser for First Feature Film in Fuerteventura
Filmmaker María Sanz Esteve is currently filming in Fuerteventura a teaser for her debut feature film, titled La isla de los prodigios. This project has been in development for two years.
Nereida Calero, the councillor for Fuerteventura Film Commission, visited the set of the project, which marks Sanz’s first feature film. She has been closely involved with the film industry in Fuerteventura for over twenty years.
Local Productions Hold Significant Value
Calero congratulated María Sanz for her work and emphasised the importance of local productions that tell stories integral to the human heritage of Fuerteventura. She noted how the island’s landscape serves as a natural film set.
A Story of Universal Themes
The narrative draws inspiration from Jesús Giráldez’s book, El médico de los corderos, exploring universal themes such as the significance of the common good, calling, and the indomitable spirit of the locals. The project is further enhanced by the cathartic strength of Fuerteventura’s scenery, which acts as an additional character within the story.
María Sanz’s Background in Film
Having worked in London for seven years across independent productions and film archives, María Sanz moved to Fuerteventura in 2000. In 2006, she founded Dunes Films S.L., producing the documentary Desde la otra orilla and short films such as Serendipia, Neuroyerto, and El Regalito. She also co-produced the short films Rutina by Sebastián Álvarez Castro and Taxi Please by Lorenza Machín, and was an associate producer for the short film Las Gafas by Alberto García.
Between 2004 and 2011, María was part of the team that organised the Dunas de Fuerteventura Short Film Festival, and she has spent 20 years facilitating film cycles and workshops aimed at educating values through cinema.
