Meeting Called for Hunters amid Temporary Ban in Haría

Meeting Scheduled to Address Hunting Concerns Following Temporary Closure in Haría

The Lanzarote Cabildo, through the Hunting Department, has invited the Lanzarote Hunters’ Society and the hunting community in general to a meeting on Thursday, 18th September, at 18:30 in the Convent of Santo Domingo in Teguise.

Purpose of the Meeting

As highlighted by the Councillor for Hunting, Samuel Martín, “the aim of this meeting is to hear the demands and concerns of the sector and to analyse the current situation following the temporary hunting ban in the municipality of Haría due to poisoning incidents reported by the Cabildo’s Environmental agents.”

Recent Developments

It is important to note that following the discovery of several dead specimens of the endangered Canary raven (Corvus corax canariensis) in Guinate, the Government of the Canary Islands recommended that the Lanzarote Cabildo extend the temporary suspension of hunting activities in Haría until the corresponding analytical results are available.

Although hunting activities continue normally elsewhere on the island, as agreed at the last Insular Hunting Council, extensive fieldwork and surveillance by agents are ongoing in Haría.

Concerns Addressed

“Nonetheless,” Samuel Martín states, “the Cabildo understands the concerns of hunters in the municipality of Haría, and although this temporary closure will be implemented, it will be offset by an extension of the hunting ban in the northern area to prevent negative impacts on the community.”

“However,” the councillor adds, “we have convened this meeting at the request of the Hunters’ Society to listen to the sector’s demands, assess the current situation, and evaluate new ways to minimise the impact of this measure on Lanzarote’s hunters.”
