The Musa Brasil Festival Kicks Off the Week with a Conference and a New Open-Air Film Screening

The MUNA will host a talk titled ‘Father Anchieta in the Jungles of Brazil’ by Lázaro Sánchez-Pinto on 10th September, followed by a screening of ‘City of God’ on 11th September as part of the Brazilian film cycle

Councillor José Carlos Acha encourages the public to attend these free events, which deepen our understanding of Brazilian culture and idiosyncrasies while transforming the museum into a gathering space for reflection and shared enjoyment

The MUSA Festival begins the week with two new initiatives that bring the essence of Brazil to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology of Tenerife (MUNA), exploring its history, nature, and cinema.

This includes a conference discussing the flora and fauna surrounding the figure of José de Anchieta and his experiences in the forests of the Atlantic Forest, alongside a screening of the acclaimed film ‘City of God’, offering audiences diverse perspectives on Brazil’s cultural and social richness.

The Cultural, Museums and Sports Councillor of the Tenerife Cabildo, José Carlos Acha, invites the public to join these new free events, which “further connect us to the culture and idiosyncrasies of Brazil, solidifying MUNA as a space open to dialogue and cultural exchange.”

On 10th September at 19:00, the programme will feature the conference titled ‘Father Anchieta in the Jungles of Brazil’, part of its lecture series. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.

The presentation will be led by Lázaro Sánchez-Pinto, former director and current emeritus advisor of MUNA, who will provide an overview of the evangelical work and observations of nature made by José de Anchieta since his arrival in Brazil in 1553 at just 19 years old.

For nearly half a century, Anchieta lived alongside Indigenous communities in the Atlantic Forest, a subtropical rainforest that then covered over a million square kilometres. He left behind writings that describe the flora and fauna of this environment in simple yet almost poetic tones.

The talk will include references to Anchieta’s own texts in Portuguese along with images of plants and animals, drawing the audience closer to the perspective of the missionary and naturalist from Tenerife in Brazilian lands.

Sánchez-Pinto, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1950, is a biologist who has worked as a guest researcher in natural history museums in London and Kassel. With an extensive scientific and outreach career, he has participated in expeditions to volcanic archipelagos in the Atlantic and Pacific as well as various African countries, and is the author of over a hundred articles and contributions to books on the nature and history of the Canary Islands.

On 11th September at 21:00, MUNA will host the screening of the film ‘City of God’ as part of the Brazilian film cycle. The event will take place in the Antonio Pintor courtyard, with free entry until capacity is reached, available online two days prior from 10:00.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, the film is based on true events and the novel by Paulo Lins. The production, featuring Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen, and Douglas Silva, garnered four Oscar nominations (Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing) and was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.

All activities are free until the planned capacity is reached. Interested attendees can check the programme details on the Tenerife Museums website via this link.
