Blurry Fish and Crossover Books Launch the Season’s Co-Productions at the Auditorium
Seven new performing arts works join the thirty collaborations of the island institution
The Auditorium of Tenerife unveils the two initial co-productions of the seven scheduled for the 2025-2026 performing arts season, adding to a total of 30 new proposals: six operas, four musical commissions, and thirteen research processes. The details were provided by the island’s Cultural Councillor, José Carlos Acha; the artistic director of the Auditorium of Tenerife, José Luis Rivero; the co-director and choreographer of the dance production Blurry Fish, Carmen Fumero; and the director of the theatrical production Crossover Books, Severiano García.
The Councillor announced that “Blurry Fish is set to premiere on the 6th and 7th of September at 19:30 in the Symphony Hall, while the theatrical piece Crossover Books, although making its debut on the 5th and 6th in Tacoronte, will have eight performances at La Salita in October.” José Carlos Acha noted that tickets for both productions are already on sale, commending “the efforts of the Auditorium of Tenerife team, which allows for the delivery of a programme of this calibre, either consecutively or even simultaneously.”
José Luis Rivero explained that “co-production involves mobilising ideas and creativity, but it also pertains to the artistic development of talent, employability, and technical resources—people, and not just financial.” The artistic director of the Auditorium recalled that “this venue was founded with that spirit: talent coming together to create for the world.” Rivero emphasised the networking with national and international cultural institutions that make these co-productions possible, stating, “We are proud of these 22 years of work.”
Blurry Fish, which opens the season at the Auditorium of Tenerife, is an in-house production in collaboration with Ritmos del Mundo Association, Chang Dance Studio, Canal Choreographic Centre, the National Dance Company, and the Eduardo Úrculo Cultural Centre. The project is led by Tenerife-born dancer and choreographer Carmen Fumero and the Taiwanese Chang Dance Theatre.
Carmen Fumero expressed her pleasure that the Auditorium of Tenerife, a national reference, has laid the groundwork for this project, which marks a significant celebration coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the company. For the creator, “this is an expression of unity between two islands, Taiwan and Tenerife, fostering a personal and cultural connection that serves as great inspiration.” Fumero hints at some of the concepts in this show: “We discuss encounters, limits and borders, and the ocean that separates and unites us.”
The piece features performances from the Canary Islands’ National Dance Award winner Dácil González, brothers Chien-Hao Chang, Chien-Chih Chang, and Ho-Chien Chang, along with Fumero herself and Miguel Zomas, who shares the artistic direction. The music is composed by Iván Cebrián, while the lighting design is by Alfredo Díez and the costume design by Yaiza Pinillos.
Like observing fish in a pond, something may seem blurry, but at the bottom, where one cannot see, a beautiful order is created that needs no explanation. Blurry Fish is a metaphor highlighting the unsaid. Just as fish swim in a pond, our experience of the world appears blurry on the surface but is profound and ordered below.
Crossover Books, from Delirium Teatro, is a text by the Canary Islands playwright Antonio Tabares, staged by the Tenerife company under the direction of Severiano García. This premiere is part of the 40 Delirios programme commemorating the company’s four decades of existence.
Severiano García stated that “40 Delirios, encompassing the play, book, exhibition, and documentary, is made possible not only through financial support but also constant backing from the Auditorium of Tenerife.” Regarding the play, he acknowledged that “it is an ambitious project with a creative team of 20 people, 12 of whom are performers—an unusual number for Canary Islands productions.” García expressed having “emotions running high,” citing an impression from actor Pedro Mari Sánchez, who, after witnessing a closed rehearsal, remarked it was “a miracle.”
The play narrates the tale of a book that continually changes hands: a copy of Ana Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. During the performance, three women reflect on their lives based on its reading. Mariana, a museum guard, sees herself living a bland, pointless reality. Patricia, a novelist, questions her own writing and the honesty of her relationship. Lastly, Silvia finds comfort in Tolstoy’s words to confront her pain. Crossover Books is a work born from a love of literature, showcasing how certain books can shed new light on our lives and help us navigate existence.
The cast includes actors Soraya González del Rosario, Joche Rubio, Maday Méndez, Silvia Criado, Abel Moral, Carmen Cabeza, Vicente Ayala, Joel Morales, Dani Sanginés, Mabel Quintero, Delia Hernández, and Ignacio de la Lastra. Direction is by Severiano García, with musical direction and composition by Julio Tejera.
Tickets for these two performances are now available on the Auditorium of Tenerife website and from 1st September at the box office, Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00. Tickets can also be purchased by phone at 902 317 327 during the same hours. Discounts are available for students, job seekers, and large families, among others.
