The municipality of La Laguna will gain two new squares, one on Camino Tornero, addressing a long-standing community demand, and the other in the neighbourhood of Vistabella.
Recently, the Local Government Board of the City Council approved the bidding process for the drafting of the basic project and execution for creating the two new squares: El Tornero (Camino Tornero) and Sor Ángela de la Cruz (Vistabella), at a total cost of €71,559.77 (including IGIC). This will be split into two lots: one for €60,756 for El Tornero and another for €10,803 for Sor Ángela de la Cruz, as detailed in the report.
The aim of the projects is to define the necessary works for creating these squares as leisure and recreation spaces for the community, according to sources from the Works and Infrastructure Department.
It was further explained that the project will include the necessary facilities to ensure the squares are in excellent condition for use, such as public lighting, telecom networks, electricity, drinking water, sewage, rainwater, and irrigation systems, amongst other factors. Additionally, each square will feature urban furniture, amenities, and provisions tailored to meet the specific needs of each lot.
The councillor responsible for the area, Ángel Chinea, stated that these two new squares “reflect the commitment of the La Laguna government to continue expanding and improving open public spaces, which are vital for fostering community life.” He added, “We are responding to a citizen demand that, in the case of Camino Tornero, is very old but has become more complex from an urban planning perspective.”
Regarding the expected timelines, once the drafting service for the projects is tendered and awarded, the councillor indicated that “we have a one-month forecast for the drafting of the basic project, which will be publicly presented to the community, and two and a half months for the execution project that, after a public information period, will include the technical details necessary for the works’ execution.”
El Tornero
Specifically, concerning the future square El Tornero, it will be located on a plot next to number 84 of the road of the same name and will be executed simultaneously with the roadway that will connect Camino Tornero with Aceviño Street, according to information from the Works Department. The total area of the project, including the roadway, children’s play area, and green spaces, will cover approximately 4,000 square metres.
As for the needs of this future square, it is intended to create a multifunctional space that will host outdoor activities and events, along with green areas and various services, which will at least include a multipurpose sports court, an inclusive playground, and outdoor fitness machines to complement, at a neighbourhood scale, the services already provided by the park and the municipal sports complex of San Benito, located less than a kilometre from this location.
Sor Ángela de la Cruz
Regarding the square Sor Ángela de la Cruz, it will be situated on a plot next to number 1 of the street of the same name, in the Vistabella neighbourhood. This area is currently partially used as parking and has a surface area of about 586 square metres.
The future project aims to create a space that combines vegetation with urban furniture to allow comfortable stays and activities aimed at children’s leisure, outdoor fitness machines, pet amenities, or other facilities deemed suitable for this location during the project’s development, according to information from the department.
