The Department of Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility of the City Council of La Laguna has confirmed that it has begun proceedings to initiate a new tender for the works related to the basic and execution project for the rehabilitation of the Casa Menéndez. This follows the first procedure, published last May with a budget of €1.5 million, which was deserted as no bidders applied within the established timeframe, as recorded in the documentation published on the Procurement Platform.

Consequently, they stated that the municipality will enhance communication and notification regarding the new public procedure to encourage greater participation from companies in the sector. These companies have been consulted and shown interest in participating and submitting their proposals.

“It has been noted that some companies were unaware of the tender at that time or were lacking personnel to undertake these works. However, given the interest from businesses to participate, we aim to issue the tender as soon as possible after completing all the required documentation, which is currently being worked on,” explained the councillor responsible for the area, Ángel Chinea.

Regarding the publication date of the new tender, the councillor noted that “we cannot specify it, as it depends on various stages and the documentation process, but the intention is for it to be as soon as possible, given that no significant aspects of the works or technical specifications of the terms will need modification.”

In this regard, Chinea indicated that the new terms will be “very similar” to those published last May, with modifications primarily focused on the timelines for the works. The expectation is that, barring changes arising from the new processing, the budget will remain around €1.5 million, consistent with the first tender.

Cultural Space

“For the City Council, it is crucial to rescue Casa Menéndez as a reference cultural infrastructure that can become a space for creation, dissemination, and promotion of various artistic disciplines,” highlighted Chinea.

The building, located in the Gracia-Finca España area, is a family home that became municipal property as a free space of a planning unit. It dates back to 1949 and consists of three floors with a constructed area of nearly 500 square metres. It is set on a landscaped plot of 6,551 square metres, which is also owned by the municipality.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the council also announced, in April 2023, its objective to construct a building on a plot adjacent to Casa Menéndez as a new headquarters for the School of Music and Performing Arts.
