The project ‘Do Not Forget About Our Heritage’, promoted by the Sports Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, has seen the participation of more than 1,360 people so far in 2025. This initiative aims to recover and promote the traditional games and sports of the Canary Islands through multiple activities spread across the island. Over 1,360 people are joining this year in the recovery of traditional games and sports in Fuerteventura.
From January to July, more than 50 activities have been carried out, including workshops, exhibitions, and showcases. These activities have taken place in educational centres, local festivals, day centres, and public events. Special actions have also been developed in collaboration with the Insular Schools of Juego del Palo Canario and other cultural entities.
During the Agricultural, Livestock, and Fisheries Fair of Fuerteventura (FEAGA), the programme had a prominent presence. Federations of Lucha Canaria, Barquillos de Vela Latina, Bola Canaria, and Petanca collaborated at this event. Additionally, researchers from the University of Lleida and the European Association of Traditional Games and Sports took the opportunity to conduct field research on the different modalities present.
One of the most significant moments was the celebration of the Day of the Canaries. This year, 32 activities were organised, compared to the 9 held in 2023, indicating a significant increase in interest in these traditions.
The Sports Councillor, Luis González, emphasised that the programme is a means to reinforce Canarian cultural identity. Through this initiative, the Cabildo aims to keep alive the customs that define the islands as a community.
‘Do Not Forget About Our Heritage’ will continue to be active throughout the year with more activities. The objective is for the population, especially younger people, to engage with and participate in these traditions, which are part of the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands. Over 1,360 people are joining this year in the recovery of traditional games and sports in Fuerteventura.
