Palo y Bola and Wrestling, Both Female and Male, at La Peña

As every year, the traditional games and native sports programme of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, ‘Don’t Forget Our Heritage’, has been present during the Festivities in Honour of Our Lady of La Peña. The surroundings of Vega de Río Palmas hosted various activities, exhibitions, and the traditional wrestling match, which for the first time featured female participants. Palo and Bola, along with both female and male wrestling, were showcased at La Peña.

Promotion of Traditional Sports

According to Sports Councillor Luis González, it is vital to maintain the promotion and dissemination of our traditional games and native sports by participating in public events. In this case, during the festivities of the island’s patron, where this programme has always been represented.

Canarian Stick Game Encounter

During the Romería-Ofrenda on Friday, 19th September, the XXI Insular Meeting of the Canarian Stick Game took place. During the procession, the stick game schools from Puerto Cabras, Dunas de Corralejo, Huriamen from Villaverde, and Sorinque from Gran Tarajal accompanied the procession as part of an exhibition.

Bola Canaria Match in Honour of the Patron

On Saturday, 20th September, the second Institutional Match of Bola Canaria was held in honour of the island’s patron, organised by the Insular Federation of Bola Canaria. A simultaneous Bola Canaria match took place featuring four teams that, according to the federation, earned the opportunity to participate during the previous season. The male teams El Time and La Placeta, alongside the female teams Ninguaria Valkiria and Las Cacharras de Antigua, were the stars of the encounter.

Wrestling in Honour of the Virgin of La Peña

As is customary, the wrestling match in Honour of the Virgin of La Peña took place on Sunday, marking the grand finale of the festivities. For the first time, this wrestling event included female teams: C.L. Faro de Jandía and C.L. Unión Tetir, who made history in the Vega de Río Palmas. Additionally, a match was held between the male teams C.L. Saladar de Jandía and C.L. Unión Antigua.

Palo and Bola, along with both female and male wrestling, were showcased at La Peña.
