The Cabildo of Lanzarote hosted a meeting on Monday between the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, focusing on the so-called “Canarian agenda”. The meeting took place in the Presidential room of the Casa Cabildo and was attended by local authorities, including the island’s president, Oswaldo Betancort. Sánchez opted to take the stairs instead of the lift, stopping on the first floor, where he was drawn to two photographs of iconic landscapes of the island.

The images, one an aerial view of the vineyards of La Geria and the other of crops in jable, are part of the campaign that led to Lanzarote being recognised by the FAO in May as an Important Agricultural Heritage System (SIPAM), becoming the first European island to receive this acknowledgment. Two days after the visit, following the interest shown by the president, the Cabildo sent the photographs to the La Mareta residence in Costa Teguise, where Sánchez is enjoying his summer holidays with his family.

This gesture from the Cabildo contrasts with recent episodes of political tension, such as a motion presented in the island plenary to declare Sánchez persona non grata, which was ultimately withdrawn after a legal report. However, the visit from the Spanish head of government to Lanzarote was marked by an exchange of courtesies and a gift symbolising the significance of the island’s agricultural heritage, despite the serious issues of water supply for irrigation and the effects of drought faced by Lanzarote’s fields.
