Political Stalemate at Lanzarote Cabildo: Noda Criticises Government’s Rejection of Initiatives

Óscar Noda, a councillor with the Mixed Group at the Insular Council of Lanzarote, has reiterated his concerns about “how the political stance of the governing group in the Insular Council of Lanzarote continues to skirt historical lows by refusing to approve any initiative presented during plenary sessions.”

“There have been countless occasions,” Noda continues, “where Oswaldo Betancort and his colleagues refuse to endorse any of the initiatives I bring to the plenary, regardless of whether they improve the lives of the people of Lanzarote. This manner of governance must be known by the people of Lanzarote and La Graciosa because the Council’s government clearly demonstrates its disregard for the population, prioritising its political and personal interests instead.”

“In this week’s session, they denied the approval of a motion requesting the equal recognition of San Marcial alongside Los Dolores as patrons of Lanzarote, acknowledging its history and ultimately recognising San Marcial and Femés as the origins of Christianity in the Canary Islands. They rejected this, once again turning their backs on Lanzarote’s history. Furthermore, they also opposed a fairer distribution of benefits from the Tourist Centres. It is well known that Oswaldo Betancort is politically exploiting both the Cacts and Tourism Lanzarote, but by refusing, they are affirming that the current distribution is what they truly desire and, above all, need for their agendas. Their rejection of a more equitable distribution of benefits certainly cannot be in the interests of the citizens of Lanzarote.”

“Ultimately, the issue lies in the consistent refusal to engage, without even considering whether any of the proposals could benefit the island of Lanzarote. This undeniably should not define the president of the Cabildo, who has taken a stance of blind opposition to any initiative. I feel sorry for our island; it does not deserve this indecent treatment from its leaders,” concludes Óscar Noda.
