The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of pre-alert for dust clouds on Saturday, 6 September, across three islands in the Archipelago: Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and several areas of Gran Canaria. The measure will take effect from 18:00 and has been implemented following warnings issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other technical sources, as part of the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena in the Canary Islands (PEFMA).
For its part, Aemet has maintained a yellow warning for these islands due to dust clouds until Monday, for the time being.
The affected territorial area includes the summits and the eastern, southern, and western slopes of Gran Canaria, as well as the entirety of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. According to forecasts, dust clouds of variable intensity are expected at altitude, with the possibility of them descending to the midlands and even coastal areas.
The Government warns that this episode of suspended dust may reduce visibility on the roads and cause health complications, particularly among those with chronic illnesses or respiratory problems. Authorities recommend that vulnerable individuals avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors and keep windows closed.
The pre-alert does not imply an immediate risk but underscores the need for heightened precautions due to the potential evolution of the phenomenon. Emergency services will continue to monitor the situation closely.
