Premiere of “Maud”: A Celebrated New Play Highlighting the Life of Surrealist Artist Maud Bonneaud-Westerdahl

Introduction of the Third Installment

The Fundación CajaCanarias and the Fundación “la Caixa” will present the premiere of “Maud,” the third and final installment of the Atlántica Trilogy, on 13 September at the Centro Cultural de La Caja de Canarias CICCA (Alameda de Colón, 1, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). This theatrical cycle has highlighted essential figures in the thought and culture of the Canary Islands.

A Tribute to Maud Bonneaud-Westerdahl

Following “Un día habrá una isla” and “Los brindis de Domingo Pérez Minik,” this new proposal brings back the memory of Maud Bonneaud–Westerdahl, a key artist in the contemporary art history of Spain and a prominent figure in the Surrealism movement within the Archipelago. The inaugural performance will start at 20:30 hours, with tickets priced from 12 euros available through the TomaTicket platform.

A Multidimensional Creator

“Maud” is the product of a co-production between the two foundations and serves as a recognition of a multidisciplinary creator whose career has often been reduced to her relationships with notable figures such as Eduardo Westerdahl, Óscar Domínguez, and André Breton. With an innovative dramaturgical approach, the play recuperates her role as the founder of Spain’s first contemporary art museum, as well as a promoter of the first female artists’ collective in the Canary Islands, and a driving force behind avant-garde art in the islands.

A Collaborative Creation

The text has been penned by Quique and Yeray Bazo, renowned contemporary dramatists, and directed by Juan José Afonso, who has extensive experience in large-scale productions both in the Canary Islands and on the mainland. The creative process has involved documentary consulting by Ángeles Alemán Gómez, author of the essay “Maud Bonneaud-Westerdahl. The Surrealist Creator.”

A Lively Performance

The stage proposal explores Maud’s life in three acts, portrayed by Melany Gabarre, Nuhr Jojo, and Inma Luna, who also take on the roles of historical figures such as Picasso, Breton, Valentine Penrose, and María Belén Morales, creating a fluid and collective performance.

An Engaging Narrative

The narrative unfolds through episodes set in Poitiers, Nazi-occupied Paris, Tenerife, and the final years of the artist, structured in a non-linear format. The artistic direction incorporates symbolic elements inspired by her artistic universe, with set design by Carmen Castañón, lighting by Dimas Cedrés, and costumes by Juan Carlos Martín, creating an atmosphere that evokes both her work and the spirit of Surrealism.

A Talented Artistic Team

The artistic team consists of professionals with solid track records in both regional and national theatre. The production is by Iraya Archipiélago, with Maxi Martínez as executive producer and Carlos Prieto as production director. Supporting the team are Bárbara Espejo as assistant director and Jesús Raya in technical direction.

A Cultural Milestone

“Maud” concludes a long-term cultural project initiated by the Fundación CajaCanarias and the Fundación “la Caixa,” designed to provide visibility and stage context to intellectual and artistic figures from the Archipelago. The premiere at the CICCA will be a new opportunity to introduce the audience to the figure of Maud Bonneaud through a contemporary and well-documented lens, also integrating references to her vital and artistic legacy in the Canary Islands.
