The spokesperson for the PSOE in Lanzarote, Ariagona González, warns that Betancort’s move aims to silence the main critical voice regarding his management at the Cabildo.

The Socialist Party of Lanzarote has denounced that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, intends to modify the Full Council regulations to hinder the attendance of María Dolores Corujo, a member of Congress and former president of the Cabildo. The Socialist spokesperson, Ariagona González, described the manoeuvre as “a direct attack on Socialist voters” and a strategy to silence criticism of Betancort’s management.

According to the PSOE, the change in the regulations would allow for unilateral alterations to the dates of the council meetings under ambiguous pretexts, affecting the political participation rights of Corujo, who holds dual legitimate representation. González reminded that recent jurisprudence supports the notion that any modification preventing attendance at council meetings violates fundamental rights enshrined in Article 23 of the Constitution.

The PSOE warns that this measure demonstrates “a government that has lost its way and institutional respect” and demands organisational alternatives that guarantee political participation for all groups, while respecting the role of the opposition in Lanzarote.
