The PSOE of Arona yesterday condemned the lack of measures taken by the tripartite coalition of PP-CC-Vox to ensure the safety of pedestrian walkways in the municipality, which are “continuously invaded by electric scooters, segways and other vehicles, despite their circulation being prohibited by municipal ordinance.”

The socialists warn that the situation has become an “unsustainable” problem, particularly in the tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, where residents and tourists express their fear of walking in spaces designed for pedestrian enjoyment. “In recent months, there have been reported accidents, collisions and falls resulting in injuries to residents and minors, highlighting the increasing danger,” the PSOE stated in a press release.

The Arona socialists criticise the local government’s “passivity” and remind that in September 2024, they presented a motion in the municipal assembly to regulate the use of electric scooters and protect public spaces, which was rejected by the government.

“During that debate, PP, CC and Vox merely offered excuses about the complexity of the regulations and promised measures that have never materialised,” the socialists said.

INSECURITY

Socialist councillor Mikaela Brito emphasises that “the pedestrian walkways in Arona should be a safe place for residents and visitors, but today they have become a hotspot for insecurity where electric scooters and other vehicles circulate unchecked. Despite municipal ordinance prohibiting this, it is not a minor issue. Accidents, collisions and falls have already occurred, even involving minors and persons with disabilities.”

Brito reminds us that “the tripartite government led by Fátima Lemes has been aware of this situation for over two years, and back in September 2024 we presented a motion, which they rejected, warning that the unregulated use of scooters would lead to serious safety issues.”
