PSOE Demands Revision of School Nursing Vacancy Criteria in Tinajo to Ensure Equal Opportunities

The PSOE of Lanzarote has called upon the Health Services Management to review and amend the criteria of the recruitment announcement published on 20th August for a school nursing position in the municipality of Tinajo.

Concerns Over Recruitment Criteria

The socialists consider it unacceptable that the announcement stipulates a master’s degree in School Health as the sole requirement, disregarding the official nursing specialisations recognised by the Ministry of Health, such as Paediatric Nursing and Family and Community Nursing, which are directly linked to health care in the school environment.

Sabina Vizcaíno Sicilia, the insular health secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, warned that this exclusion “gives the impression that a specific requirement has been tailored, prioritising one very narrow criterion rather than acknowledging the official training of highly qualified professionals who have undergone a rigorous healthcare specialisation process.” In this regard, she insisted that “specialised healthcare training cannot be undervalued while discussing the guarantee of quality care in schools. The announcement must be amended to be fair, transparent, and legally compliant.”

Equality and Fairness in Employment

Furthermore, Vizcaíno emphasised that the situation could violate fundamental principles of equality, merit, and capability in accessing public employment. She noted that it represents an inefficient use of human resources by excluding professionals with advanced competencies in school care, health promotion, management of childhood chronic conditions, and emergency care. “We demand the inclusion of official nursing specialisations as a requirement or preferred merit and the removal of the interview process, as the announcement is currently drafted raises more questions than assurances regarding equality of opportunity for the position,” she asserted.

Concerns Over Timing and Transparency

The PSOE also criticises the haste with which the process was announced, occurring in mid-August with only five working days for application submissions, thereby hindering participation and reducing transparency.

With this demand, the socialists stress that the quality of the School Nursing Programme in Tinajo can only be assured if it employs professionals with the highest qualifications and experience, guaranteeing equal opportunities and avoiding announcements that generate doubts about their transparency and legality.
