PSOE Lanzarote Denounces Violence Against Councillor by Municipal Employee

PSOE Condemns Violence Against Councillor in Tinajo

The Socialist Party of Lanzarote has strongly condemned the violence experienced by the Socialist councillor in the Tinajo Town Hall, Begoña Hernández, at the hands of a council employee while she was legitimately carrying out her duties as a public representative.

The incident, which Hernández has already reported, occurred when she visited the Town Hall after being previously authorised to consult municipal documents, following several unsuccessful attempts to obtain a copy through the usual channels. “Once there, while attempting to photograph the documents—a practice fully supported by law—a worker forcibly prevented her from doing so,” the PSOE claims.

Support from Party Executives

The spokesperson for the PSOE Insular Executive in Lanzarote, Cristina Duque, has expressed the party’s complete support and solidarity with Hernández, stating: “A councillor has the right and obligation to scrutinise the actions of the municipal government. What has occurred in Tinajo is extremely serious: this right has not only been obstructed, but violence has ensued. This is intolerable and we will not allow it.”

The PSOE of Lanzarote reminds that this situation is not an isolated incident. In every council meeting, Councillor Begoña Hernández has faced derogatory treatment from Mayor Jesús Machín, including disrespectful remarks and sexist comments, which have been publicly denounced by the socialist group.

Hostile Environment

“This episode is a direct consequence of a climate of hostility that has long been entrenched in the Tinajo Town Hall, fostered by the authoritarian and aggressive attitude of its mayor,” Duque asserted. “When basic principles of democratic engagement are disrespected from the mayor’s office, incidents like this happen. We will not normalise this behaviour.”

The PSOE of Lanzarote announces that it will take all necessary actions in response to these events. “We will firmly defend the rights of our colleagues and denounce any abuse of power or attempts to silence those who responsibly and courageously exercise opposition,” concluded the spokesperson.
