Approximately 200 people gathered yesterday outside the Güímar Town Hall in response to a call from the Ecomarca Platform for the Defence of Southeast Tenerife.

The protest aimed to highlight the public’s rejection of the wind projects known as Pilón I and Pilón II, promoted by the company Disa, and to raise concerns about a possible new development, Pilón III, in the areas of La Medida and Pájara.

During the gathering, a manifesto was read in which the platform denounced what it described as an “imposition of large industrial projects” that, in its view, “destroy the environment and benefit only a few.”

Ecomarca accused Disa of advancing an energy model it considers “speculative, opaque, and harmful to rural communities and the natural spaces of the municipality.”

“FAIR and PARTICIPATORY”

The manifesto called for a “fair, participatory, and decentralised” energy transition, advocating for solutions such as rooftop photovoltaic installations, local energy communities, and the modernisation of existing parks, rather than continuing to appropriate agricultural land and protected landscapes for new infrastructures.

From the council, a meeting has been requested with the promoting company, scheduled for after the Socorro festivities, to understand the project’s scope in detail and demand an accessible report written in clear and comprehensible language for the public.

The aim is to convey this information to residents and prepare a new set of objections if necessary.

Ecomarca, for its part, insists that it does not oppose renewable energy but demands planning based on the public good and citizen participation, which does not entail— they assert— “a sacrifice of the landscape, agriculture, and the identity of the territory in favour of private profit.”
