The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Pablo Rodríguez, has approved the project for the new section of the motorway connecting Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable, between the Airport and the Pozo Negro junction in Fuerteventura. Public Works Approves the Project for the Airport-Pozo Negro Motorway Section in Fuerteventura

The project, which is included in the Canary Islands–State Roads Agreement 2018-2027, will span the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua. Its aim is to connect and enhance the North-South axis of the island, improving mobility and reinforcing road safety. The project is set to have a five-year execution period, with a budget of €215.9 million, to be allocated over several years.

Pablo Rodríguez, the minister, emphasised that “the new connection will enhance the link between the airport, the main tourist areas, and urban centres in the central and southern regions of Fuerteventura, contributing to the economic and social development of the island, improving access to services, and enhancing the mobility of both residents and visitors.”

In this regard, he highlighted that “the section between the Airport and Pozo Negro will feature a tunnel over one kilometre long due to environmental conditions, and this will be the first of its kind constructed in Fuerteventura. This project will provide the island’s road network with a modern and efficient infrastructure, promoting more sustainable mobility.”

The tendering process will commence shortly, with the aim of publishing it on the tender platform within this year, following the necessary procedures.

The Project

The initiative includes the construction of four main junctions: the Airport Junction, which will connect to the FV-2 and service the island’s main air access; the El Castillo Junction, linking to the FV-413 towards the tourist and urban centres of Caleta de Fuste, Triquivijate, and Antigua; the Las Salinas Junction, which will maintain the current connection with the FV-2 and the south of Caleta de Fuste; and the Pozo Negro Roundabout, which will resolve the intersection with the FV-50 towards Agua de Bueyes and Antigua.

Among the notable works is the construction of a 1.2-kilometre tunnel, located between kilometre points 9+230 and 10+430, which will include false tunnels at both ends. A 190-metre viaduct will also be erected in the Barranco de la Torre, alongside several structures at the Airport and El Castillo junctions, as well as an overpass at Las Salinas and three underpasses to maintain the continuity of roads and rural accesses.

In this sense, Rosana Melián, the General Director of Road Infrastructure, explained that this will be the first approved project to incorporate renewable energy installations. The objective is to cover the total electricity consumed by the new lighting network through production from photovoltaic panels, making the installation energy-neutral and thus self-sustainable, contributing to decarbonisation and reduction of atmospheric emissions. The areas for intervention will include the lighting of the new junctions at the Airport and El Castillo, with the installations positioned adjacent to each junction (19 and 22 panels), and the lighting of the new tunnel, where panels will be installed in the median of the road (41 panels).
