The Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario has installed a new environmental monitoring device at the Los Hornos Tourist Office in El Charco. This initiative aims to enhance sustainability and provide residents and visitors with up-to-date information regarding air quality in the capital of Fuerteventura.

Real-Time Monitoring

The equipment can detect suspended particulate matter of various sizes (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10), as well as pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, and sulphur dioxide. Additionally, it features sensors that record meteorological variables such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed.

Calibration Phase and Public Access

During the first month, the device will be in a technical adjustment period to ensure the accuracy of the results. Following this, the data will be available on municipal information screens and the official tourism website, discoverpuerto.es.

Autonomous Technology and Connectivity

The device is designed to operate continuously, powered by a solar energy system with backup batteries. Data is transmitted in real time via mobile connection and stored on a cloud platform, allowing for remote analysis and management. The station, which holds European certifications as well as certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has been engineered to withstand adverse weather conditions.

Official Statements

The Mayor, David de Vera, noted that this action strengthens the municipality’s ability to monitor environmental quality and protect the health of its citizens. Meanwhile, the Councillor for Public Health, Rosa Rodríguez, emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader strategy for urban sustainability and climate change adaptation. Puerto del Rosario incorporates an air quality measurement system in El Charco.
