SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 19 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Officers from the Civil Guard’s Provincial Maritime Service in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have rescued a loggerhead turtle in good condition and recovered another deceased specimen that were trapped in fishing nets along the shores of the islands.

According to a statement from the Benemérita, the operation occurred when the officers, who were patrolling the coast, spotted a group of drifting nets half a mile from the Santa Cruz de Tenerife dock.

The nets spanned approximately ten square metres, posing a navigational hazard. The officers approached to remove them and discovered two loggerhead turtles entangled within. One was decomposing, while the other appeared to be in perfect condition.

The agents successfully freed the turtle that was trapped in the nets, releasing it at that moment.

Finally, the Civil Guard contacted the Tahonilla Recovery Centre, which falls under the Natural Environment Department of the Cabildo. They requested the delivery of the deceased specimen for study, as well as the nets in which it was caught, which are currently in the custody of the Civil Guard to locate the owner.
