The Master Games Resume Sporting Activities for Over 30s in September
Sports Councillor, Yolanda Moliné, states that “the games return with an ambitious agenda full of proposals”
The VIII Master Games, organised by the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Sports Department, have scheduled nine sporting events for September aimed specifically at people over 30.
A total of eight disciplines will be featured in this second phase of the master season: taichi, trail, badminton, and athletics will join the calendar, while paddle surf/kayak will hold two sessions. Additionally, yoga, hiking, and cycling have already held their initial sessions before the summer and will continue with their schedules.
The Executive Councillor for Sports, Yolanda Moliné, emphasises that “after the well-deserved summer break, the Master Games return in September with an ambitious agenda full of introductory sports activities for the weekends, prioritising fun and camaraderie to foster a habit of sporting practice among those over 30.”
Upcoming Events
The first sporting discipline to kick off this September will be taichi. The inaugural and only session of this season will take place on Saturday 6th September at 9:30 AM on the Bajamar Seafront in the municipality of La Laguna. The session will provide an introductory practice to the Taichi Chuan styles: Yang, Chen, Wudang, and Chikung, as proposed by each instructor.
In terms of water activities, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host two new sessions of paddle surf/kayak at Las Teresitas beach in September, one on Sunday 7th and the final session on Sunday 21st September. This introductory activity aims to familiarize participants with paddle surfing and kayaking, focusing on enjoyment and fun rather than competition.
The first Sunday of September will see the introduction of trail running, featuring a circular route through the mountains of the Valle de La Orotava, starting and ending in Aguamansa. This moderately difficult course will last approximately two and a half hours, following the Cruz del Dornajito trail, and serves as a great introduction to mountain running for those in good physical shape.
The second weekend of September will feature the debut of badminton in the VIII Master Games. This opening session will take place at the Los Hinojeros Municipal Sports Pavilion in Granadilla de Abona on Saturday 13th September from 9 AM, under the supervision of the Canarian Badminton Federation, which will provide all necessary equipment, including rackets and shuttlecocks, for participants.
On Sunday 14th September, the second and final session of road cycling will take participants on a circular route through the northern part of the island, between the municipalities of Garachico, Buenavista del Norte, and Los Silos. This approximately 24-kilometre course will start at 10 AM from the Garachico Town Hall square and return to the same point.
Another addition, athletics, will feature prominently in the Master Games on Saturday 20th September. The Antonio Domínguez Alfonso Stadium in Arona will host various events, including 60, 400, and 1500 metre races, as well as 60 metre hurdles, long jump, shot put, and women’s pole vault. Notably, the minimum age for participation in athletics is 35 years, with technical organisation provided by the Tenerife Island Athletics Federation.
Yoga will conclude its master season in Arona. The second and final session of this season will take place on Saturday 27th September at Las Vistas beach at 9:30 AM. This activity offers an introduction to two forms of yoga, Hatha Yoga and Thai Yoga, focusing on gentle, introductory physical activity lasting around two hours.
The last sporting activity for September will be hiking, a highly sought-after discipline among athletes over 30. Titled ‘In Search of the Giant Lizard’, the sixth trail of the year will occur on Sunday 28th September, traversing the Natural Monument of Montaña de Guaza in Arona, a fascinating environment where specimens of the giant lizard still survive. The hike will be guided by experienced professionals qualified to lead such activities, offering insightful interpretation of the sites visited.
Yolanda Moliné emphasises that “none of this would be possible without the invaluable collaboration of the local councils, which generously provide their spaces for the organisation of these events in their municipalities, thereby expanding the free sports offerings available to their residents.”
It is important to remember that one of the fundamental principles of the Master Games is to promote participation, with no competitive intent, allowing anyone, regardless of their physical condition or initial skill level, to register and enjoy hours of active leisure.
All events are free of charge with limited spaces, requiring prior registration on the website deportestenerife.es by clicking on the respective links for each discipline.
Registration periods always begin at 00:01 hours on the Monday of the week prior to each event, meaning registration is currently open for the taichi, paddle surf/kayak, and trail activities taking place on the first weekend of September.
